NSW: Where can a self-managed strata get a legal health check?

Question: Where can a self-managed strata get independent guidance to check they are meeting their legal obligations?

We self-manage our 7 townhouse complex and have been doing so for about the last twelve years without any complaints. With all the changes in strata law and the responsibilities of the committee, is there somewhere we can go to check what we should be doing and whether we are doing things right?

We have contacted strata advisers online, but they can’t help. They just suggested taking over our bookwork. We are aware of the new annual reporting requirements and want to make sure we are complying.

Answer: There are several good free resources, including LookUpStrata, OCN, NSW Fair Trading, and a new committee training course launching later this year, to check you’re meeting your obligations.

Well done for self-managing for that long. There are good online resources for checking specific questions here on LookUpStrata and on OCN’s website . NSW Fair Trading has also improved its resources. And look out for their new free committee training course coming out later this year.

The training course will go through your obligations, with links to plenty of resources. Self-management is specifically considered in the content. Good luck!

This post appears in the August 2026 edition of The NSW Strata Magazine.
