This article was updated in June 2026 to reflect the latest information from NSW Fair Trading.
From late 2026, strata committee members in NSW will need to complete mandatory annual training. The new requirement is part of the ongoing NSW strata law reforms aimed at ensuring committees have the knowledge and confidence to manage their schemes effectively.
What the training involves
The strata committee member training will be a free, one-hour online course delivered by NSW Fair Trading. It’s self-paced and covers the essentials:
- understanding your legal duties and governance role,
- keeping proper records of meetings and decisions, and
- knowing when to escalate issues.
Who needs to complete the mandatory training?
All strata committee members will need to complete the course within three months of their appointment. This applies to both new and returning members. Once the annual requirement is in place, committee members will need to complete training each year to continue serving on their committee.
When does it start
NSW Fair Trading expects the training to launch in late 2026. The exact start date and details on how to access the course will be confirmed closer to launch.
How you’ll be notified
Committee members who have registered on Strata Hub will be contacted via email by NSW Fair Trading, so make sure you are registered. Lookupstrata will continue to keep you updated as more details are released. Make sure you are subscribed to Lookupstrata so you don’t miss an update.

As things stand at the current time we have trouble getting owners to stand for the OC executive. The future does not look good.
I have 3 rolls, Charman, Treasurer and Secretary. We have 6 standalone villas; we are the only owner occupier the other 5 villas are rented out. As for the training I will be asking the Strata Manger for a payment to do the taring as it cuts into my time. Our Strata Manager has been asked to visit our properties, but they want paying, that is something I don’t understand.
What is the point of the Training if all Committee Members do not participate – why be on the Committee if you are not prepared to be an active member? It’s time more owners put their hands up at their AGM. Some office bearers (in particular Secretaries) feel obliged to continue for years because nobody wants to take on the responsibility. This can cause a lot of resentment by those left carrying the load.
Do all members of an elected OC executive Committee need to do the training, or can a rep of that committee complete the training and deliver the outcomes to other members?
