This session introduces a newly published resource to help you navigate retrofitting. Hazel Easthope, Professor of Urban Studies at UNSW and co-author of the report, joins Julie McLean from Strata Community Australia Victoria. They’ll talk through what the current regulations mean for federal, state and local government, owners, and service providers.

Hazel Easthope is Professor of Urban Studies and Deputy Director of the City Futures Research Centre at UNSW. Her research focuses on improving the quality and experience of strata and apartment living. Her expertise spans property title and ownership structures, estate governance and management, urban renewal and housing redevelopment, building retrofits/upgrades and resident relationships. She is in the top 2% of researchers globally for citations in Stanford/Elsevier’s citation analysis reports, and she is regularly consulted by industry, government and peak body organisations in Australia and internationally. Underpinning her research is a deep concern with how to enable people to feel at home in the places where they live.
Julie has contributed to SCA (Vic) for more than 20 years, serving as a Board Member for much of that time and helping to shape the organisation’s growth and success. In recognition of her service, she received an Honorary Life Fellowship in 2022.
Julie maintains a strong interest in education and workshops and volunteers a significant amount of time to educating SCA members across Australia and New Zealand, as well as committees and lot owners. She is also a qualified trainer who delivers the Certificate IV in Strata Community Management for SCA Education Ltd.
