Is there a separate community title system in Tasmania?
No. Tasmania doesn’t have a separate community title Act. Larger developments, known as community development schemes, are created and managed under the same Strata Titles Act 1998 as a standard strata scheme. If your property is strata titled in Tasmania, this is the one Act that governs it, whatever the size of the development.
What's happening in Tasmania right now?
The Strata Titles Act 1998 has been under review since 2020. In September 2026, the Tasmanian Government released a draft Strata Titles Amendment Bill 2026 for public consultation, which closed on 25 October 2026. The draft aims to give strata schemes more flexibility in planning and development, improve access to information, and clarify governance and management arrangements, including the rules on common property and by-laws. We’ll update this page when the Bill is introduced to Parliament.
In 2021, Tasmania's strata industry body estimated that as many as nine in ten bodies corporate in the state were inactive, meaning many aren't holding meetings or keeping proper insurance in place. If you're not sure whether your body corporate is active, check directly with the Land Titles Office or a strata manager.
